Elaeagnus
Sometimes underrated, and not a particularly showy shrub, although the variegated varieties provide the perfect foil for other garden plants. Elaeagnus are good structural plants and are tolerant of wind, they are also salt tolerant making them an excellent choice for costal and exposed planting. Climate change is causing weather extremes, recently we have seen temperatures top 40C for the 1st time; coupled with a prolonged drought. Heavy unprecedented periods of rain causing water logging. Mild winters followed by late spring frosts. Finding resilient plants that can cope with our ever-changing climate is a challenge, and will be key to creating flourishing gardens over the coming years.
Each month I will be focusing on a plant which can survive whatever the weather. January: Primula Wanda A cultivated hybrid of the common garden primrose. Vibrant magenta flowers in spring, this pretty, compact variety is particularly resilient to heavy rain and drought.
