They are amongst some of the most free flowering plants in our gardens and the modern free flowering varieties will out perform most bedding plants, producing a succession of blooms all summer from June to October.
Not only do they come in nearly every colour shade, they are also grown for their beautiful range of scent.
Whether you are planning to plant a whole border of roses, or just add one or two to a mixed border, here’s my 5 top tips:
- Late autumn is the best time to plant, the soil is just right, still warm, aerated and moist.
- Choose a sunny open site if possible. Some roses will tolerate more shade than others.
- Plant bare root roses, these are generally available November-February.
- When planting, dig a large hole twice the size of a football. Use mycorrhizal granules to help root establishment.
- Ensure the union of the rose (where the stems join above the rootstock) is below the soil level. Water well.
